Introduction to Evolution and Scientific Inquiry

This website contains all materials used in BIOL 01104 Section 4, Spring 2020 at Rowan University with Dr. Spielman. This course now meets ~remotely~, but used to meet Monday/Wednesday 11-12:15 and Friday 11:00 am-1:45 pm in Science Hall 239.

Post-Spring Break Class Schedule and Materials

Note: Assignments designated “embedded in Blackboard” can be reached under Blackboard –> Content and completed within Blackboard. Rest assured they are NOT tests!

Materials are subject to change up until the Monday of the given week. Below is a ROUGH OUTLINE of what we’ll be doing.

Week of 3/30/20

Week of 4/6/20

  • Lecture videos and associated materials
    • Phylogenetics II: slides
    • Phylogenetics “Lab”: associated website (no assignment specifically uses this, this video will help to further clarify and understand phylogenies building and mapping on phylogenies!)
  • Background reading these are REALLY HELPFUL!!! Make sure to read/watch these too!:
  • Assignments
    • “Mapping evolutionary change to phylogenies” due Thursday 4/9/20 at 11:59 pm. This document should be done by hand and LEGIBLY scanned or photographed to submit to Blackboard.
    • “Homology and convergent evolution” (embedded in Blackboard) due Sunday 4/12/20 at 11:59 pm

Week of 4/13/20

  • Lecture videos and associated materials
  • Assignments
    • “Concepts in Speciation” (embedded in Blackboard) due Thursday 4/16/20 at 11:59 pm
    • “Concepts in Biogeography” (embedded in Blackboard) due Sunday 4/19/20 at 11:59 pm

Week of 4/20/20: All lectures are OPTIONALLY LIVE

Week of 4/28/20

  • Lecture videos and associated materials
    • Origin of life and major evolutionary transitions:Slides
    • The fossil record and macroevolutionary trends: (slides are the same as above)
    • OPTIONALLY LIVE on MONDAY: Human origins and evolution: Slides
  • Assignments (only 1 this week!!)
    • “The fossil record and evolutionary transitions assignment” (embedded in Blackboard) due Thursday 4/30/20 at 11:59 pm
      • The Wednesday Zoom session will focus on this HW

FINAL ASSIGNMENT due Tuesday 5/12/20 at 11:59 pm (or early 5/5/20 for bonus points)

  • Download here
  • Counts as double assignment grade
  • Absolutely NO extensions allowed due to university grading deadlines
  • For a BONUS of 10%, submit the assignment week early, Tuesday 5/5/20 at 11:59 pm.
  • During the final exam time slot (Monday 5/4/20 from 10:15 am - 12:15 pm) there will be an office hours session to ask questions about the final assignment. We will NOT be doing this assignment together as a class like we have been doing, but I will answer any and all of your questions during this session!!
    • To guarantee there will be time to answer your questions, arrive on time!!
